I purchased a Macintosh PowerBook 165C on "Kleinanzeigen" (a german marketplace like Craigslist) and noticed that one of the Serial Ports, the Modem Port, was missing 😧

Further investigation showed that the socket was completely removed but the PCB seems to be ok.

The PowerBook 165C uses a special kind of surface mounted sockets where all 8 Pins are side by side in line
I was not able to find such a socket as spare part or any information about it.
So I ordered a standard socket with two rows of pins and decided to modify it.

The first thing I did was removing some of the shielding, so that the connections can be routed to the back.

Then I removed the connection of the shielding at the front of the socket.

I found that two of the pins are already in the correct location and bended them to the back of the socket.
All others were cut very short, just enough to solder a wire to it.

I added some isolating rubber and used a drill to round off the openings.

Soldering was really hard because there is not much space, but I got it to work, after measuring between the pins and the front of the socket, making sure all connections are ok.

And now, the PowerBook 165C again has two properly working Serial Ports 🙂
